My paintings are about the regular things like light, shapes, color, and memory. I paint with soft brushes on linen or panel, in translucent layers, usually starting from a dark or bright contrasting ground. Making paintings is the best way I have found to engage with things in the world, since what I am painting keeps still long enough for me to come close to it and see. And it keeps me still long enough to see. There is a solidity in making paintings (or photographs) that I have not found anywhere else.

Rainer Maria Rilke laments how much of "us" there is in the spaces we inhabit. We and "what is ours floats into the air, like steam from a dish of hot food." Rilke asks, "Does the infinite space we dissolve into, taste of us then?" I think that in many places it does.
